African migrant boat in disaster

Spanish fishermen discovered a boat off of West Africa with one survivor, the bodies of seven dead migrants, and fifty others missing. According to the lone survivor, the boat was trying to reach Spain from Cape Verde. Thousands of Africans set sail for Spain’s Canary Islands each year, though the numbers are down sharply this year – from 35,000 in 2006, to just 13,000 thus far in 2007.
