Europol: separatist arrests double; Islamic terror arrests decline

In 2007, the number of arrests for Islamic terrorism declined 22 percent, from 257 to 201, as separatists arrests climbed well over 1,000. However, nationals in a number of EU member states continued to be recruited for missions in or related to conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan throughout 2007. “Radicalization is a very worrying phenomenon in the EU, and it is now partly done through the Internet. More than 5,000 Web sites were used to radicalize people in Europe,” said Gilles de Kerchove, the EU’s anti-terror coordinator.
