School Ban Sparks Belgian Hijab Campaign

The decision by a school in Brussels to forbid Muslim girls from wearing the hijab/headscarf has motivated girls to protest the move. A petition circulated by students at the Institut des Ursulines read: “The hijab ban has no ground and the administration offered no explanation and did not consult with teachers or parents.” The school, which is Catholic, but includes a significant 85% student population of Muslims, has decided to ban the garment at the start of the next academic year. Many students announced they will leave the school, and the petition urges the Belgian public to support the students in their cause.
