Open letter to Obama calls for even-handed Middle East policy

The New York chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) together with the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) and other advocacy groups across the United States called on President Barack Obama for even-handed policy that ensures sustainable peace in the Middle East.

The coalition of groups – which included several Jewish peace and advocacy groups, called for recommendations to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. “As President Obama said yesterday, the era we are entering is one of responsibility,” said MPAC Executive Director Salam Al-Marayati. “We pray that he and his administration will take responsibility to help the people of Gaza to rebuild their lives, end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory, and produce a viable Palestinian state.”

In addition to offering congratulations to President Obama, the coalition of groups, in a joint letter published in the New York Times inauguration special, stressed that President Obama carefully examine the foreign policy interests of the United States, and changes be made between the outgoing and ingoing administrations.
