Video emerges of abducted British Columbia journalist

Beverly Giesbrecht, who adopted the name Khadija Abdul Qahaar when she converted to Islam in 2002, was on a freelance assignment for the Al-Jazeera network when she disappeared Nov. 11, 2008 in northern Pakistan. A videotaped message has emerged from a Vancouver journalist who was abducted last year. She says she was kidnapped by the Taliban and is unsure of her location, but believes she’s in the Afghan border region and says there are “air raids.” A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs says the government is aware of the video, but will not comment or release information to protect the “safety of the individual involved.”
