Muslim culture is celebrated in art

The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery have opened an Islamic trail to reach out to the city’s Muslim communities. The trail explores works of Muslim culture at the museum, treating the history of Islamic art as well as Muslim migration to the UK, using textiles, metal works, ceramics and paintings. The project is a collaboration of the museum and Birmingham based Arts organization Ulfah Arts. They have invited 11 local Muslim artists to contribute to the exhibition.

Apart from the organizers, also local politicians praise the outcome. MP Sadiq Khan, for instance, believes the project will help to better understand Muslim culture and welcomes the breaking of barriers between mainstream high culture and the Muslim community. The museum has already supported Islam and arts related projects in the past and will now display the trail permanently.
