Paris to memorialize Tunisian revolution figure Bouazizi

News Agencies – February 8, 2011
City councillors in Paris unanimously adopted a proposal to name a street, square or other site after Mohammed Bouazizi, the Tunisian vegetable vendor whose protest suicide sparked that country’s Jasmine Revolution. The proposal had been brought forward by Tunisian-born Mayor Bertrand Delanoe.
Bouazizi, 26, doused himself with petrol and set himself alight in the town of Sidi Bouzid in mid-December after being repeatedly harassed by authorities for selling vegetables on the street.
He later died in hospital of his injuries. His act shocked Tunisians and sparked widespread anti-government protests, which toppled Ben Ali on January 14.
