A majority of French (56%) are against the prohibition of the Islamic veil in public spaces, compared to the 44% who are favorable to such a prohibition, according to an opinion poll published Monday in France. Those younger than 35 are more favorable to the prohibition (55%) than those older than 35 (39%). In France, the law of March 15, 2004 forbade obvious religious signs in educational establishments, but the veil is permitted in public spaces.
