Intercultural marriage: Moroccan parents do not accept her choice

Twenty-eight year-old Aicha has been happily married to Argentinean Laurens (28) for three months-except that her marriage has left her parents completely out of the picture. They have not even seen the couple’s two young children. They met through friends. Her family does not accept her choice and would like Laurens to convert, which would mean Aicha would have to wear a headscarf. In contrast, Aicha notes that Laurens’ Catholic mother does not expect her to convert. Laurens sees himself as completely Dutch, and Argentinean. Aicha calls herself a Dutch Moroccan. They both enjoy living in Rotterdam. Laurens does not understand how her family can cast her away. They have both pledged to let their children openly choose their own partners.
