Illegal immigrants set up new camp in French port next to UK-bound ferries

Hundreds of illegal migrants have set up a new makeshift camp on the edge of Cherbourg Port in northern France. The shantytown is a temporary stay for many, who hope to bypass police and try to board UK-bound passenger and cargo ships. Citing the unsanitary and inhumane conditions, Bernard Cazeneuve, the town’s mayor, called upon the government to set up a proper center to house the migrants. Even with the prospect that this may attract even more migrants, Cazeneuve states that completely dismantling the camps will simply result in the search for a new location of makeshift shantytowns, and will not solve the problem. The illegal immigrants are protected from deportation under international law, though they have no official status in French law.
