Art by young Muslims

Four young Muslim artists from Kirklees aim to give a contemporary twist on stereotypes and traditional art forms. University art students Asiya Seedat, Anisah Denny, Fatema Mayet and Naila Afeefah, from Fartown, want people to take a fresh look at art in the Change in Perspective display in Batley. They say it explores what it means to be young, British and Muslim and how art can play an important part in challenging the view that “Muslims don’t _do’ art”. Fatema, 19, said: “Through my work I am trying to find links between calligraphy and in contemporary art that will express my identity as young, British and Muslim.” Maria Bottomley, from Amada Arts, the organisation hosting the exhibition, said “We want to raise awareness of the talents and achievements of young people in our local communities and the positive contribution they make.”http://themuslimweekly.com/newsdetails/fullstoryview.aspx?NewsID=D988D90A8B19382D379C2939&MENUID=HOMENEWS&DESCRIPTION=UK%20News
