Muslim women’s law firm breaks down stereotypes

Women from the Amal Law Group in Chicago, which may be the nation’s only law firm composed solely of Muslim women representing the vast diversity of the Islamic faith, are hoping that they can dispel stereotypes about Muslim women. “People think that somehow we’re weak and not able to express opinions,” said Janaan Hashim, the firm’s founder. “People think that we are prohibited from getting an education and being engaged in society,” said Maryam, a lawyer at the firm who said that she always knew she wanted to be a lawyer. The Amal Law Group offers legal services on issues including family, real estate, immigration, employment, and civil rights.
