Anti-Muslim sentiment on rise in the Netherlands

According to a monitor published by Leiden University, violence against Muslims in the Netherlands rose considerably in 2007. The number of violent incidents rose from 62 in 2006 to 82 in 2007; however, the total number of incidents of racism declined. The report also concluded that anti-Muslim comments by the PVV party, led by Geert Wilders, and the media attention that Geert and PVV receive, have contributed to the rise in anti-Muslim sentiment and phobias in the Netherlands.
