Finland: Muslims find refuge in Finland

Muslim refugees and immigrants from war-torn countries like Iraq and Somalia are finding refuge and freedom in Finland. While the country only has one official mosque, many Muslims are undergoing training to lead the faithful as interest – including that of native Muslims in Finland – is generating interest and community cohesiveness. Abdullah Tami who heads the Finnish Islamic Party, hopes to gain a foothold in the 2011 elections with a platform including emphasis on social and green issues, and an interest in imposing Sharia law – which he believes has gained an incorrect and negative image. “We are explaining the fundamentals of Sharia law and how it can work within the Finnish community – it is not about stoning and flogging solely – it’s about simplifying – a Sharia law-led banking system, dealing with promiscuity, for instance as Finland has one of the highest rates of sex outside of marriage,” said Tami.
