Attempted arson of mosque in Saint-Priest (Rhône) outside of Lyon

In response to an attempted arson of the mosque of Saint-Priest (Rhône) in an eastern suburb of Lyon, thousands gathered to show their solidarity against Islamophobia and to denounce the criminality of the act. The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) and the rector of the Grande Mosque of Paris Dalil Boubakeur both expressed their disappointment in the incident. The MRAP (Mouvement contre le racisme et pour l’amitié entre les peoples or Movement against Racism and for Friendship Amongst People) stated that the act “confirmed the roots of this kind of racism in Islamophobia.” The president of the CFCM Mohammed Moussaoui called for action against the perpetrators. French president Nicholas Sarkozy has also publicly denounced this “horrible crime”.
