Muslim inmate sues state over ‘halal’ meat requests

A Muslim inmate at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Hartford, Connecticut has filed a lawsuit alleging that prison officials ignored his requests for food and meat conforming to Islamic standards. Ricardo Collins said that he was being denied his constitutional right to freedom of religion said that the denial during Islamic feasts are also denying him “great ‘spiritual meaning,’” as they do for the Muslim community throughout the world. Collins has filed a federal lawsuit, naming several prison officials and the Islamic chaplain at the facility. Department spokesman Brian Garnett said that meals served to Muslim prisoners during their feast days complied with religious standards, although the meals did not contain halal meat.
