Headscarf award for fighting discrimination awarded by newly formed ‘headscarf brigade’

A Dutch supermarket chain has been presented with the first ‘Headscarf Award’, in honor of making a significant effort to get the headscarf accepted in the workplace. The Chain, Dirk van den Broek, received the award in the al-Kabir mosque in Amsterdam by the recently formed Headscarf Brigade. The brigade is composed of three female Muslims who hope to combat discrimination in the labor market, and plans to also give courses to Muslim women to strengthen their confidence in taking up employment and strengthen their interviewing skills. Additionally, the brigade plans to offer lessons for employers to learn and accept the employment of Muslim women, and to “look further than the headscarf alone.”
