‘Mohammed’ becomes Britain’s most popular boy name

29 Oct 2010

Having maintained the titles of “most popular boy name” in Britain for a long time, both “Oliver” and “Jack” have been replaced by “Mohammed” for the year 2009 according to Britain’s Office of National Statistics.
In actuality, “Mohammed,” the most common spelling of the name is ranked 16th in the country, but when it is combined with the 12 variations of other spellings for the same Arabic name, the Office finds that it tops the list of names in Britain.
Khaled Anis, a spokesman for the Islamic Society of Britain commented on the report, saying, It’s a popular name because he is the prime prophet of the Muslim community. Muslims are becoming more aware of their own faith. Part of the reaction to this is being proud of who you are, and part of that might be the increase in the name Mohammed.
