“The Republic needs the engagement of France’s Muslims more than ever,” said Bernard Cazeneuve, during the country’s “open mosque” weekend. The Interior Minister was invited to share a “brotherly cup of tea” at the Saint-Ouen l’Aumone mosque.
Cazeneuve welcomed the “highly symbolic gesture that mirrors the vivre-ensemble of the Republic.” The “open mosque” weekend occurred during a difficult time for Muslims, who face increased discrimination since the attacks in January and November 2015.
“When these barbarians attack our youth, irrespective of religion, the first to suffer in terms of religious degradation are the Muslims committed to the Republic,” Cazeneuve said, adding that the country “will not make that mistake.”
“Faced with a high terror threat, we need the children of France more than ever to defend the Republic,” he concluded.
