Emily Thomas
Originally from Exeter in Devon, I completed my BA Theology and Religion at the University of Birmingham in July and am currently studying for an MRes Theology and Religion in the same department. I have a particular interest in the experience of Muslim communities in Europe, particularly in the context of securitisation and policy. My undergraduate dissertation examined how discourses of radicalisation, including those employed in UK counter-radicalisation policy, ignore community-level socioeconomics in their analysis of the radicalisation process, and instead focus too heavily on the ideological and psychological state of the individual terrorist, and I intend to continue to explore these themes, particularly with regards to the phenomenon of securitisation, in my Master’s thesis.
