In line with the introduction of burqa bans in many countries in Europe over recent years, a survey of fifteen European countries from the Pew Research Center has shown that “Most non-Muslim adults in Western Europe favor at least some restrictions on the religious clothing of Muslim women who live in their country”.

A Pew Research Center study has observed that “people who say they personally know a Muslim are generally more likely than others to have positive opinions of Muslims and their religion”. Knowing something about Islam (rather than personally knowing a Muslim) is less associated with positive opinions about Muslims and their religion, however.

The Pew Research Center’s ninth annual study of global restrictions on religion, which analyses the extent to which governments and societies around the world impinge on religious beliefs and practices, has revealed that restrictions on religion around the world continued to climb in 2016, with Muslims the most common target.

A survey from the Pew Research Center has reveals insights into the relationship between Christian identity and views regarding religious minorities and immigrants. Christian identity in Europe “is associated with higher levels of negative sentiment towards immigrants and religious minorities” as “self-identified Christians – whether they attend church or not – are more likely than religiously unaffiliated people to express negative views of immigrants, as well as of Muslims and Jews”.
