French European Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Jouyet has promised France will remain impartial during negotiations for the EU’s presidency, which it will assume July 1, 2008. President Sarkozy has publicly stated he is wary of admitting Muslim Turkey into the EU, suggesting a Mediterranean grouping as an alternative to full membership. Jouyet has assured the press he will remain objective and balanced toward Turkey.
