Dutch Youth become more physically conservative
The presence of Muslim youth at schools and sportclubs, changes the way teachers deal with their pupils and also how youth relate to each other. Some Muslim parents find it for example not easy to allow their children, especially daughters, to go on a school camping trip. Afraid that there will be too much mixture between boys and girls. The same goes for gym classes at school. Not all Muslim parents like the idea of their daughter wearing something short during gym. Some schools are now considering to introduce separate gym classes for boys and girls.
At sportsclub more and more youth showers afterwards still wearing underwear. It is said that this was started by Muslim youth, who wear underwear out of religious convictions. Fellow non-Muslim team-members also started to wear their underwear while showering. Probably this has not only to do with Muslims setting some sort of ‘trend’, but also they embaressment many pubers feel towards their own body, probably plays a role.
