Denmark: Mother of four sentenced to two years for allowing genital mutilation of her daughters

In Denmark’s first case involving sentencing of parents for the genital mutilation of their daughters, a court found the mother guilty of allowing two of her daughters – now 10 and 12 years old – to have the controversial operation performed on her children, and the parents have been charged with planning to have a third daughter mutilated. The sentence has been set to two years for the mother, originally from Eritrea. The father was also charged, but found “not guilty” on all accounts.

Both parents said that they did not know their daughters would be mutilated, and the mother told the court that she believed her daughters were being treated for a worm infection when the operations were performed.
