DVD aims to challenge Islamophobia

An MP says he will do everything in his power to make sure copies of a DVD tackling Islamophobia can be seen in every school in the country.

Produced by Show Racism the Red Card (SRTRC), the 40 minute long presentation accompanied with relevant educational pack, aims to challenge myths and stereotypes regarding Islam. The DVD features interviews from young people along with players such as Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Habib ‘Kolo’ Toure and Ahmed ‘Mido’ Hossam.

Glasgow Central MP Mohammed Sarwar said: “Such is the power of football on young people, this DVD will help to take the fights against racism and discrimination to wider society. There is no doubt that Islamophobia is on the rise with increasing acts of hostility being shown towards Muslims or those perceived to be Muslims. This DVD will educate young people on the positive contribution that Muslim make and help increase tolerance and respect for all. I will be speaking with the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Education Secretary Ed Balls, who I know are both supportive of the DVD, and press them to ensure this pack is sent to every school across the UK”.

With the use of high profile sporting personalities, SRTRC aims to combat racism and other forms of discrimination in society. The official launch of the DVD took place at St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United.
