Muslims seek to build future in Italy

The International Herald Tribune follows the dichotomy of Muslim Italians in Milan, navigating the bi-cultural lives. The article focuses in the profitability of youth – both as an economic investment “straddling two cultures” but also in their generational reality as having fluid identities.

A new magazine written by second generationers, called “Yalla Italy” (Let’s Go, Italy) seeks to capture precisely this – “young Muslims juggling identities for Italians curious about a religion and a way of life barely extant just 20 years ago.” Yalla Italy’s chief editor Martino Plillitteri describes this cultural tug as “one vision driving towards the past, the other toward the future.”

The magazine intends to provide coverage of a range of concerns that Muslims living in a non-Muslim society face on a daily bases, including clothing, fashion, prayer, and food.
