Oklahoma Muslims ask legislators to back bill against offensive school mascots

The Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called on state legislators to end the use of offensive or race-based names for schools, teams, or mascots, by supporting a measure called the “Anti-Discriminatory Mascot Bill.” Oklahoma CAIR executive director Razi Hashmi said: “we commend the Tulsa Indian Coalition Against Racism for its leadership in introducing the Anti-Discriminatory Mascot Bill. We call on Oklahoma State legislators to recognize the great contributions by our Native-American brothers and sisters who have been an integral part of this state’s foundation. Our nation has come a long way since these discriminatory practices were tolerated, and we urge our legislators to end the use of offensive names in Oklahoma public schools.”
